Description

One-on-one or group tutoring will be focused on supporting a child with engaging with a book via learning & practicing vocabulary, phonics/letter correspondence, fluency, reading comprehension, discussion techniques, games, and independent and group reading. Prior to the training, parents will be asked to share reading data about their child if they are in school, and will also be given a survey.

  • Based on the child’s skill level, they will work on the skill one-on-one and practice the target skill. If youth require more comprehension support, then there will be discussions, and modeling how to think. If youth require more phonics/letter correspondence there will be more songs and hands-on games.
  • If children are under the age of 5, parents are asked to be present so that parents can practice the skill.
  • There will be a formative assessment taken by the facilitator via observation notes, running records,
  • The facilitator will provide researched-based activities from other early childhood researchers.

The overall goal is to help youth improve their reading skills and to find ways to enjoy literacy.
